The Coelacanth is a rare, ancient fish that was once thought to have gone extinct more than 65 million years ago, until its rediscovery in 1938. One of the most famous populations lives in the waters surrounding the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean. Known locally as the “Gombessa”, the Coelacanth is often called a “living fossil” because it has retained many primitive features dating back over  million years.
